Facilities to train combat troops will be enhanced by the $77 million expenditure at Lavarack Barracks as part of the $1.457 billion Enhanced Land Force Stage 2 Facilities project (ELF2), to be spent across 12 Defence bases and training areas across Australia.

The Townsville economy will get a direct $126.5 million injection from Commonwealth defence and research spending, following the recommendation for Parliamentary approval of projects at Lavarack Barracks and the Australian institute of Marine Science by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works (PWC).

PWC Chair, Senator Jan McLucas, said the committee was pleased to support such significant infrastructure investment in vital industries in Townsville, against a backdrop of rising demand for workers in the region.

“The Committee is pleased to support such a significant infrastructure investment in regional Australia,’ Senator McLucas said.

“Townsville is in a good position with the economy on the upswing.

“Demand for workers is increasing and stimulus spending will roll out over the coming 12 months.

“With the injection of this spending for research and defence infrastructure Townsville is well positioned to take advantage of the coming economic recovery.”
