Townsville is the export and processing centre for the province.
A large number of existing minerals projects are currently underway 16 approved advanced projects in the Townsville – Mt Isa region QRail forecasts and increase in mining production from 3.6 million tpa (2004-05) to 6.3 million by 2010.
Even if there are no more new projects, these projects alone will increase rail haulage by 42% by 2010 Townsville has already established a large heavy industrial area called The State Development Area. This area will be used to attract further value adding procesing plants.
